19/09/2023 (Vietnam) - The agriculture sector and localities were in dire need of sustainable solutions for durian cultivation and consumption, according to Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Le Minh Hoan.
To achieve this sustainability, the industry needed a fundamental reorganization, transitioning from business-centric relationships to cooperative ones, and implementing registration codes for durian planting according to standards. Close collaboration among businesses, cooperatives, and farmers was crucial for the entire supply chain's sustainable development.
Nguyen Quoc Toan, director of the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry’s Centre for Digital Transformation and Agricultural Statistics, acknowledged the rapid growth of the durian industry and the need for policy frameworks and suitable standards for sustainable development.
Additionally, diversifying into processed durian products and formulating specific plans for nationwide durian growing areas were essential. Overcoming key challenges such as rapid growth, unfair competition, and establishing strong connections among stakeholders were critical.
Moreover, the industry's export potential was highlighted, particularly in the context of new-generation free trade agreements like RCEP. These agreements provided opportunities for the durian industry to expand its exports.
In summary, sustainable development in the durian industry necessitated a holistic approach, including reorganization, registration, diversification, and addressing industry challenges, while capitalizing on the opportunities presented by trade agreements like RCEP.
