06/11/2023 (Malaysia) - Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) have forged a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology for gas-fired power plants. The MoU signifies a joint commitment to the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), according to TNB's CEO, Datuk Seri Baharin Din. CCS, a crucial tool in the NETR's energy transition strategy, will allow TNB and Petronas to combine their expertise and efforts in developing CCS technology for gas-fired power plants.
Tengku Tan Sri Muhammad Taufik, President and Group CEO of Petronas, emphasized the complexity of the energy transition, requiring cooperation across sectors to achieve carbon neutrality targets. He stated that the MoU exemplifies both parties' shared conviction to provide energy security responsibly while supporting low-carbon aspirations outlined in the NETR. With their collective experience and technical capabilities as energy infrastructure owners, they aim to expedite the development and deployment of CCS technology within a decarbonized energy system. This collaboration will harness available technologies to address immediate emission reduction needs, as Petronas remains dedicated to sustainable solutions aligned with its net-zero by 2050 objective.
As Malaysia transitions to a low-carbon economy, natural gas will play a pivotal role in the country's energy landscape, serving as a reliable and affordable transitional base load power source. Gas-fired power plants will facilitate the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, ensuring a stable and sustainable energy supply for the nation. The MoU between TNB and Petronas marks a significant step forward in their joint commitment to advancing CCS technology and supporting Malaysia's energy transition efforts.
