MALAYSIA, 22/11/2024 (Asia News Channels) - American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla is actively incorporating components from approximately 45 Malaysian suppliers, involving both direct and indirect partnerships. This collaboration includes technology transfers to local vendors, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI).
MITI revealed that Tesla sources local components such as semiconductors, machinery inspection systems, and factory automation solutions. Despite not committing to local vehicle assembly, MITI confirmed that the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) consistently engages Tesla on potential supply chain collaborations within the country.
In a written response on Parliament's official website, MITI addressed concerns raised by Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) regarding Tesla's plans following reports of the company canceling proposals to establish a manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia.
"Tesla's presence as a leading global EV manufacturer in Malaysia reflects its confidence in the local EV market and the government's supportive policies," MITI stated.
The government aims to attract more investment in the automotive sector by strengthening the local supply chain and promoting the localization of automotive components. MITI underscored that Tesla’s entry into Malaysia in 2023 was facilitated through the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Global Leaders Import License program. This initiative is designed to draw major multinational BEV manufacturers to establish operations in the country.
Under the program, Tesla is required to meet specific commitments. These include installing at least 50 fast EV chargers with capacities exceeding 180 kilowatts, ensuring that at least 30% of these chargers are compatible with non-Tesla EVs, and collaborating with at least 10 local charging companies to advance charging technology.
The ministry highlighted that these measures are expected to enhance local capabilities and stimulate Malaysia's EV ecosystem.
