He acknowledged the significance of the Malay language in preserving Malaysian identity and national unity, as well as its role in job opportunities, especially in the public sector. However, he equally emphasized the advantages of English proficiency, considering it a global language of business that opened doors to international opportunities.
Tan Sri Lee highlighted that Malaysians were once commended for their English proficiency, leading to leadership roles at international conferences. English proficiency improved employability and career prospects, locally and abroad. Moreover, English was crucial for accessing a wealth of information and engaging with diverse cultures in our interconnected world.
He also noted that English proficiency facilitated higher education abroad and staying updated with global advancements. Tan Sri Lee urged Malaysians to find a balance between both languages, celebrating their linguistic heritage while preparing for a competitive future in a diverse world. Embracing bilingualism meant acknowledging the richness of both languages' benefits.
