MALAYSIA, 24/05/2024 (Asia News Channels) - Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp Malaysia Bhd (SMBC Malaysia) has announced the appointment of Atsuhide Shiojiri as its new president and CEO, effective April 30, 2024. Shiojiri succeeds Hiroshi Okawa, who has returned to Japan for a new role within the group.
In a statement, the Japanese financial group highlighted Shiojiri’s extensive corporate banking experience and deep understanding of SMBC’s operations. These qualities are expected to be instrumental in driving the growth of transaction banking and deposit placements, aligning well with SMBC’s Asia Pacific Division’s business strategy.
Shiojiri began his career with the bank in 1996 when it was known as Sakura Bank. Over the years, he has held various leadership roles within the group in Japan, Belgium, the UK, and Germany. Additionally, he was seconded to an affiliated company of one of the bank’s customers in Hungary.
Most recently, Shiojiri served as the Managing Director and head of marketing at SMBC Bank EU AG in Frankfurt, Germany since June 2021. He played a key role in the successful merger of SMBC Bank EU AG and SMBC Nikko Capital Markets Europe GmbH, which became a universal bank in April 2022.
SMBC Malaysia is chaired by Datuk Wan Mohd Fadzmi, who has over two decades of experience at Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) and served as president/CEO at Bank Pertanian Malaysia Bhd (Agrobank) from 2011 to 2017.
