MALAYSIA, 09/07/2024 (Asia News Channels) - Petronas is gearing up to launch its LNG project in Canada, bolstering its fleet with three new energy-efficient liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels. These ships are primarily designated for deliveries from North America to Petronas' customers.
The addition of the new vessels—Puteri Sejinjang, Puteri Mahsuri, and Puteri Mayang—brings the total number of LNG ships in Petronas' North American operations to six.
"Previously, three vessels—Puteri Saadong, Puteri Ledang, and Puteri Santubong—were delivered and named in January 2024," Petronas stated in a recent announcement.
Built at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in Ulsan, South Korea, each of these vessels boasts a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, making them the largest in Petronas' diverse fleet.
Adnan Zainal Abidin, Petronas' Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the long-term relevance of LNG as a critical component in the energy transition. "With the arrival of these new vessels, Petronas reinforces its commitment to offering this much-needed fuel to its customers in an efficient and reliable manner," he said.
Petronas holds a 25 percent stake in LNG Canada, located in Kitimat, British Columbia, one of the world's lowest carbon-emission intensity LNG facilities. The facility is scheduled to commence operations by the end of this year.
"Through the strategic expansion of its LNG fleet, Petronas not only enhances its readiness for the start of LNG Canada but also underscores its commitment as a progressive energy partner, offering low-carbon solutions to its customers," the national oil company stated.
