10/10/2023 (Malaysia) - Malaysian energy company Petronas successfully adopted a 5G private network at its Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang in Melaka, Malaysia. This achievement made Petronas the first entity in Malaysia to launch a private network that utilized 5G technology for enterprise purposes.
Petronas, with support from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Department of Communications and Digital (KKD), completed the project. The milestone was commemorated at an event held in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysia had taken a distinctive approach to building 5G networks, initially opting for a single wholesale model instead of allowing mobile operators to construct their individual networks. As of that time, the coverage in populated areas had reached 70.2%, closing in on the 80% target set for the beginning of 2024. MCMC was collaborating with mobile service providers to facilitate the deployment of standalone networks and the development of additional use cases for various industries across Malaysia.
Government agencies stated that the network's launch aligned seamlessly with Malaysia's Ekonomi Madani plan, which aimed to enhance the country's economy. Specifically, it was in line with the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, designed to elevate Malaysian industry up the value chain. A significant aspect of this plan involved investments in new technology and the creation of a "digitally vibrant nation."
Malaysia's deputy prime minister, Fadillah Yusof, commended PETRONAS for their vision and dedication to Malaysia's progress. He particularly praised KKD Minister Fahmi Fadzil for his unwavering commitment to steering the country's 5G efforts. Yusof emphasized, "Our strategic adoption of 5G technology positions us as leaders in the energy industry. By combining 5G with internet of things, AI, and automation, we are establishing Petronas as a frontrunner in the global technological race."
