MALAYSIA, 27/11/2024 (Asia News Channels) - Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic has expressed surprise over AirAsia’s use of his iconic George Town mural, “Children on Bicycle,” on the livery of one of its planes.
The artist shared his reaction on Instagram Stories, posting a photo of the AirAsia aircraft at Penang International Airport on November 22, 2024. The mural, originally painted on Armenian Street in George Town, is prominently displayed near the plane's cockpit. Alongside the image, Zacharevic wrote, “I think we need to talk…” and tagged both the airline and its founder, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
In a comment to the Straits Times, Zacharevic stated that AirAsia did not obtain his consent before using the artwork. He described the incident as disappointing but noted that it was not the first time his creations had been used without permission.
“I first noticed it on my friend’s Instagram Story and then I saw it myself at the airport on Friday,” the artist was quoted saying.
Despite the situation, Zacharevic has indicated he will not pursue legal action and intends to resolve the matter directly with AirAsia.
