MALAYSIA, 28/10/2024 (Asia News Channels) - Gamuda Bhd, in partnership with Conlay Construction Sdn Bhd, has been awarded the development contract for the Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Power Plant in Sabah. The announcement was made in a filing with Bursa Malaysia, where Gamuda revealed it received the project’s letter of award from Upper Padas Power Sdn Bhd (UPPSB), a company in which Gamuda holds an indirect 45% interest through its joint venture entity, UPP Holdings Sdn Bhd.
The Ulu Padas project will be managed by an unincorporated joint venture between Gamuda and Conlay, holding 75% and 25% stakes, respectively. The contract, valued at RM3.05 billion, includes a target date for commercial operations set on or before December 31, 2030.
The scope of the work for this 187.5-megawatt hydroelectric project covers the design, construction, testing, and commissioning phases. It will involve key infrastructure such as a roller-compacted concrete dam, main and auxiliary powerhouses, a water conveyance system, access infrastructure, and various permanent facilities. Additionally, the project will incorporate a 275-kilovolt (kV) switchyard, a 33kV sub-transmission line, workshops, storage, operational facilities, and a residential village to support project personnel.
Upon completion, the hydroelectric plant is projected to generate an annual average of 1,052 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy. This addition is expected to increase Sabah’s reliable energy capacity by approximately 15%, effectively doubling the state’s renewable energy mix. The project is aligned with Sabah’s goal of reaching a renewable energy share of 35% by 2035.
Gamuda also noted that this development contract is expected to positively impact the group’s revenue and earnings, starting from the financial year ending July 31, 2025, and continuing through to project completion.
