15/11/2023 (USA/ Malaysia) - In the past, the United States (US)-Malaysia Comprehensive Partnership had concluded its 10th year, with both countries having formulated a practical plan to further strengthen their ties. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced this plan back on November 15 during a special lecture at the University of California, Berkeley. Despite Malaysia's relations with the US not garnering the same level of attention as those with China, Japan, or the Philippines, Anwar emphasized its crucial nature.
Anwar, who was also the Finance Minister at the time, stressed that Malaysia considered its strategic relations with the US essential for its economic vibrancy and national security interests. The US ranked among Malaysia's largest foreign investors, with over US$100 billion pledged in various sectors. Additionally, the US was Malaysia's third-largest trading partner, and the two nations engaged in defense and security cooperation, conducting numerous military exercises.
Beyond security ties, Malaysia had become a robust partner to the US across various domains, including education, climate change, public health, and empowering marginalized communities. Malaysian students sought world-class education in American universities, contributing to national development upon their return. Malaysia also actively participated in the US-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, promoting regional economic integration and collaboration.
Moreover, Malaysia played a crucial role in the global tech industry, supplying a significant portion of semiconductor components to the US. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysia's decision to reopen its industrial operations played a critical role in Ford's production of the iconic F-150 pick-up truck. The country was also a vital link in medical technology supply chains, with numerous companies employing skilled workers. Malaysia's attractiveness for technology giants like Intel, Infineon, and Amazon Web Services further solidified its position as an important global supply chain hub for critical technologies.
