The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday.
In addition to attending the main ASEAN Summits, Anwar will participate in the Plus One Summits, which involve ASEAN’s seven dialogue partners: Australia, China, Japan, India, South Korea, the United States, and Canada. "Additionally, the Prime Minister will attend the Asia Zero Emission Community Leaders Meeting, and ASEAN Leaders’ Interface Sessions with representatives from the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, ASEAN Business Advisory Council, and ASEAN Youth," Wisma Putra stated.
The 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits are expected to provide a platform for Malaysia to share its perspectives on issues such as ASEAN community-building, regional peace, economic integration, green economy initiatives, and energy transition. The summits will also focus on emerging technologies, food security, and Timor-Leste’s progress toward full ASEAN membership, as well as ASEAN’s relations with external partners.
"Malaysia will also articulate its position on the South China Sea, and developments in Myanmar, Palestine, and the Middle East," the statement added.
At the closing ceremony, Laos, the current ASEAN Chair, will officially pass the chairmanship to Malaysia. Malaysia will assume the chairmanship on January 1, 2025. Anwar is expected to deliver remarks outlining Malaysia’s vision for its term as ASEAN Chair.
The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, and officials from various ministries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Ministry of Economy, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
