MALAYSIA/ AUSTRALIA, 31/07/2024 (Asia News Channels) - Australia-based hyperscale data centre specialist AirTrunk has started operations in Malaysia with the opening of its flagship AirTrunk JHB1 (JHB1) hyperscale data centre in Johor Bahru.
The development of the 150-megawatt (MW) JHB1 data centre, spanning over 10.3 hectares, was completed in over four million work hours without major safety incidents. This achievement underscores AirTrunk’s commitment to maintaining high safety standards at its construction sites.
The initial phases of JHB1 will provide over 50MW of capacity for large technology customers. The data centre serves a major cloud availability zone, offering strong domestic and international connections to regional technology hubs, including Singapore, with an end-to-end cross-border connection strategy.
AirTrunk's JHB1 data centre boasts an industry-low design power usage effectiveness of 1.15, making it one of the most efficient data centres in the country. The facility features an artificial intelligence (AI)-ready design, including the company’s first deployment of direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology alongside traditional indirect evaporative cooling and high-density racks, reducing energy consumption by up to 23%.
AirTrunk founder and CEO Robin Khuda highlighted the significance of JHB1’s rapid and safe delivery. "The new facility is a pivotal step in adopting AI in Malaysia and AirTrunk’s growth as a trusted partner in the APJ region. Our long-term investment in Malaysia supports customers as they grow and implement groundbreaking solutions at scale to promote sustainable cloud and AI development."
Pei Jet Lim, AirTrunk’s head of Malaysia, emphasized the company’s goal to contribute to the local economy by developing local talent and delivering critical digital infrastructure. "The new data centre supports the rapid growth of cloud and AI in Malaysia and aligns with the Madani government’s initiative to establish AI hubs in the country. The long-term demand from JHB1 also supports investment in the energy grid and green energy developments."
JHB1 is part of AirTrunk’s leading APJ data centre platform, which includes 11 centres offering more than 1.4 gigawatts of total capacity to meet the growing demand from global tier-one technology companies in the region.
